History of the Nations
By Way of Introduction
A nation’s appreciation to their
archives reflects a magnanimous cultural value towards historical
significances. The acknowledgement of the importance of archives in creating
the right spirit of nationhood and statehood should be molded and visualized
into a recording of the nations’ collective memory as well as to support
national accountability.
The Diorama of the Nation’s
Passage in History reveals the dynamic voyage which the people of Indonesia have
traveled, presented through a fusion of archives, artworks and technological
gadgets. The idea o create the Diorama is motivated by the wish to elevate the
role of archives as a prominent ingredient in fostering the spirit of national
unity and integrity and devotion o be the fatherland, as well as to promote
archives as the unifying knot for the heterogeneous nation.
The creation of archives into
works of art through technological interventions has the primary objective of
presenting archives to the general public in a manner that is easy and
interesting. History of the Nation is very effective and educative for
students, scholars, and public.
The Diorama of the Nation’s
passage in History is essentially an endeavor of the National Archives of the
Republic of Indonesia, ANRI, to accomplish one of its missions, which is to
provide the public with an access tool to make use of archives for the benefit
of the government and to support development, research and scientific
activities in generating the people’s welfare, according to established
archival rules and principles; it is ultimately benefit the whole nation.
Hall A (Diorama History of the Nations Prologue)
Hall A provides Diorama History
of the Nations Prologue. In the first part there is a plaque commemorating
inauguration of the Diorama by the President of the Republic of Indonesia, DR.
H. Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono on August, 13, 2009. Hall A provides general
description of the Diorama through wall display and digital book, and ancient
inscription of archeological remains of Indonesian empires.
Hall B (The Era of Prosperity in the Archipelago and National Heroes’
profiles)
The passage from the Era of
Prosperity in the archipelago until the Era of colonialism is presented in Hall
B. It is presented in murals of heroes’ struggle. In another part of the hall,
there is an acrylic laser marking which displays short profiles of some
national heroes. In this hall we can see a globe decorated by led lamp which
illustrates struggling locations of the heroes connected by a monitor in order
that visitors can operate interactively through touch screen.
Hall C (The National Awakening Era)
In Hall C visitors are
transported to the atmosphere that was heavily impregnated with the actions of
youth leaders from 1908 until 1928. Historic notes are presented on panels
attached to the walls and columns. The original document of the Youth Pledge is
one of the displayed objects. Statues of triumvirate figures and founder of
Boedi Oetomo are also incuded. A floating Diorama, depicting the historic Youth
Pledge and ‘Indonesia Raya’ song in two versions turn into point of interest in
this Hall. Corridor connected Hall C and Hall D enclosed Diorama of 10 November
1945 battle action in Surabaya displaying the act of tearing the Dutch Flag at
Oranje Hotel. Visitors are able to see a documentary film conveying the action.
Before entering Hall D, visitors are induced grasp diorama of General Soedirman
when escorting guerrilla war, and are also displayed one of Bung Karno’s
handwriting for General Soedirman.
Hall D (The Era of Proclamation)
The moments prior to the
proclamation of independence by Mrs. Fatmawati statue, sewing the Red and white
National Flag and photos of Indonesian Independence preparation in wall
display. It is also displayed statues and voice of the proclamation leader,
Bung Karno as well as nation symbol “Garuda bird” and ended by heroic anthems through
touch screen.
Hall E (The Era of Surviving and Filling up the independence)
In this episode, visitors see
how the country and nation that had just obtained their freedom were several
strives and revolts by several strives that threatened national unity. Internal
as well as external conflicts took place during the period of 1945-1965. The
hall tells not only struggles through armed resistances but also table
discussions. The heroism displayed will hopefully kindle an exemplary heroic
spirit to the succeeding generation. Visitors interactively witness cooperation
archives resulted from discussions held in that era. The Presidents of Republic
of Indonesia’s speeches from the time to time can be perceived through sounds
by headphones.
In corridor connected Hall E and
Hall F, there are archives in the form of wall display acrylic, containing
various nation’s activities, namely Presidents of Republic of Indonesia’s
inaugurations, general elections archives, and executive order of March, 11
1966 archives.
Hall F (The Era of Pertaining Integrity of the Nation and Country)
At the beginning of Hall F,
visitors are then invited to contemplate of the historic event of September 30,
1965. Visitors are induced to the atmosphere which is completely different than
of the previous halls. Here, there is a kind of alley with a dramatic interior
preparing the visitors psychologically before watching the horrific film on lifting
up revolution heroes’ corpses who were assassinated during the abortive
Communist coup from Lubang Buaya well. At the end of Hall F there are wall
displays of photo panels of Presidents of Republic of Indonesia for period of
1945-2014 using “your smile my Indonesia” concept. Right next to it, there are photos
of Vice President of the Republic of Indonesia from 1945-2014.
Hall G (The Era of Reformation)
Hall G presents selected events
that took place during the period of 1998-2008. The room interior representing
miniature of the People’s Advisory Assembly/ Indonesian Legislative Assembly
building is set up by parliamentary history. Right after that visitors are
invited to watch a documentary film on transformation era towards reformation.
In this hall, there is amendment of 1945 Constitution in the form of wall
display. The next display contains of the Pronouncement archive of President
Soeharto when he decided to resign on May, 21, 1998. Visitors are also able to
hear the voice of President Soeharto when he made a speech on it. Before
entering Reflection Theater, visitors are tempted to see wall display panels
enclosing photos of traditional houses and clothes, fully equipped by
interactive computer presenting traditional dancing from 33 provinces in
Indonesia.
Hall H (Reflection Theater)
At the end, visitors are invited
to watch a film on struggles for independence which would hopefully inspire
their conscience and motivate them to ponder that national prosperity can only
be achieved through hard work and sacrifice.
Film displayed is a documentary
told nation’s struggle histories from 1942 until the present time. Also there
are documentaries of speeches and biography of President Soekarno.
